It’s a very Hans Gruber thing to say I know, but when reflecting on our three types of training courses I often wonder whether innovative approaches such as eLearning or Virtual learning will eclipse the traditional classroom-style course. Sure they offer more flexibility for different learning styles and different budgets but is there something to be said for the personal touch?
The feedback we get from all three approaches is consistently
excellent, but trends show that classroom courses are still the
preferred option. It presents an opportunity to network among your
professional peers, fosters a sense of solidarity and support
(particularly for the more intense certifications) and more
anecdotal interaction always helps to bring the material to
life.
The relationships that can develop in this kind of environment are
not just beneficial to getting through the course, or represent
useful contacts for the future, in December 2011 we had our first
QA Wedding!
Fiona and Colin met on our ITIL v3 Foundation course in June 2010.
After sitting together all week, completing the final exam gave
Colin an excuse to invite Fiona out for a celebratory drink and the
rest as they say, is history! Love blossomed and they were living
together in a matter of weeks and then engaged to be married soon
afterward.
Listening to this lovely story, made me realise that a classroom
course is the perfect place to meet like-minded individuals. We
spend the majority of our time at work so having someone at home
who can empathise about what we do, and understand the stress of
our roles and even be able to offer practical advice could very
well be the holy grail of relationships.
And in this age of internet dating and speed dating, an environment
where meeting people is not the primary goal could very well take
the pressure off! (Just as long as you're not so relaxed that you
forget to pay attention to the instructor... Fiona and Colin both
passed their ITIL Foundation of course!)
